Can You Drink Kombucha Every Day? How Much Is Right

Kevin Gillespie

Remember Groundhog Day? Bill Murray wakes up to the same day, over and over, and slowly turns into a better version of himself.

That's basically my relationship with kombucha. Same small glass, every day. And a better gut, bit by bit.

So, can you drink kombucha every day? Short answer: yes. But there's a right way and a wrong way to do it.

The short answer

For most healthy adults, a small glass of raw kombucha every day is fine, and it's how you get the most from it.

Start with around 100ml, build up to 200 to 250ml, pick a low-sugar one, and rotate it with other fermented foods. If you're pregnant, have liver problems or need to avoid alcohol, check with your GP first.

Why every day?

Kombucha isn't like coffee, where you drink it when you need a boost. The benefits come from consistency.

A Stanford study found that eating fermented foods regularly, including kombucha, made people's gut bacteria more diverse and lowered signs of inflammation.

And in a small Georgetown trial, people with type 2 diabetes who drank kombucha daily for four weeks saw their blood sugar drop. It was only 12 people, but it's a promising start.

ZOE, the gut health scientists, say fermented foods are one of the easiest ways to add variety to your diet. And variety is one of the strongest signs of a healthy gut.

My daily kombucha habit

I'm 46, and something fermented every day has been a game changer for me.

Along with cutting out alcohol, it got rid of years of bloating, gas and cramps. My afternoon slumps have gone, and I've got more energy than I had in my thirties.

People always ask me when to drink it. My answer is always the same: whenever works for you. The trick is doing it every day.

How much kombucha should you drink a day?

Here's what I tell people in the shop:

  • Week one: 50 to 100ml a day, with food.
  • Week two: if you feel fine, 100 to 150ml a day.
  • After that: 200 to 250ml a day is a good regular amount for most people.

You can go up to a full bottle if you feel good on it, but there's no prize for drinking loads. More isn't better.

If you get bloating or a gurgly tummy at first, that's usually your gut adjusting. Drop back a bit and build up slower. Our side effects guide explains more.

When's the best time to drink it?

Honestly? Whenever you'll actually stick to it. A few pointers:

  • With food if you've got a sensitive stomach or get heartburn.
  • Not too late if caffeine affects your sleep. It's made from tea, so there's a little in there.
  • In the evening instead of wine or beer. That's where it's done the most good for me.

Choose the right kombucha

If you're drinking it every day, quality matters.

  • Raw and unpasteurised. That's where the live cultures are. If it's not kept in the fridge, it's probably been pasteurised.
  • Low in sugar. The best kombuchas have around 2.5 to 4g of sugar per 100ml. Here's how to choose one.
  • Short ingredient list. Tea, sugar, culture and real fruit or botanicals. Not a list of sweeteners and “natural flavourings”.

Mix it up with the 4Ks

Don't drink the same flavour from the same brand every single day. Different makers use different cultures, and variety is what your gut loves.

Better still, rotate kombucha with the other fermented foods. I call them the 4Ks: kombucha, kefir, kimchi and kraut. A glass of kombucha one day, a spoon of kimchi with dinner the next.

Look after your teeth

Kombucha is acidic, so sipping it slowly all day isn't great for your teeth.

Drink it in one go with a meal, have a glass of water afterwards, and wait a while before brushing. Here's more on kombucha and tooth enamel.

Who should take care?

Kombucha has a trace of alcohol, a little sugar and some caffeine. Check with your GP or midwife before making it a daily habit if you:

  • are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • have liver problems or a weakened immune system
  • have diabetes and are watching your sugar
  • need to avoid alcohol completely

Stick to shop-bought kombucha too. Homemade brews are fun, but getting them wrong can make you ill. We explain the alcohol side in is kombucha alcoholic?

Make the habit stick

A daily kombucha works best alongside a few other daily habits:

  • 30 different plants a week, which ZOE recommends for a healthy gut.
  • Cooking with good extra virgin olive oil.
  • Moving every day, and strength training three times a week.
  • A daily scoop of creatine, which I believe most adults should take to protect their muscles as they age.
  • Less booze and less junk.

Keeping it affordable

Daily kombucha from single bottles adds up. Buying a box works out cheaper per bottle and keeps your fridge stocked.

The bottom line

Yes, you can drink kombucha every day. Start small, pick a good one, mix it up, and give it time.

I'm 46 with an 8-year-old daughter, and I want to be fit and active in my 70s. It's never too late to start a good habit, and this one's easy to stick to.
